“The best sports people in the world practice more than they play.” – Sean Fitzpatrick, member of New Zealand’s All Blacks Rugby team (The All Blacks are the subject of James Kerr’s International Bestseller “Legacy”)
(Available in Montgomery County, MD only) The Angels Open Workouts will be held throughout the year serving those that are looking for more reps than what is being offered by their teams/organizations. If your child is playing in a “rec” league, it is very likely that they are not practicing enough; which means that they are unlikely to see improvement in their play. In a February 2020 post on littleleague.org, the #3 problem facing youth baseball was “Too many games; not enough practice.” And when these teams do practice, your child is likely not getting enough reps. This model translates into slow growth (if at all).
With little to no practice time for your child, you cannot expect them to see improvement. And with little to no improvement, your child is more likely to quit playing. This is where the Angels’ Open Workouts can help you!
The Open Workouts are essentially practices for those that attend. Players will go through a 10 minute warm-up; followed by playing catch; but not the normal way of playing catch. During this time, players will be asked to work on aspects of their throwing and catching. We will put the kids through drills that are designed to improve their footwork; their arm mechanics; and how they catch the ball. Players will then go through 30 minutes of defensive drills and 30 minutes of offensive drills.
Your child will receive both quality instruction AND a much-needed high volume of reps!
Who can attend? We will offer separate sessions for players ages 8-12 and for players ages 13+. We expect there to be kids with varying degrees of talent; but that doesn’t matter. We will NOT adjust the practice based on talent. Our practice plans will benefit kids of all talent levels. NEVER think your child is not talented enough to attend; or is too talented to need extra work!
When will the sessions be held? We will put together our March-June schedule no later than March 15th.
Where will session be held? We will hold sessions at local Montgomery County Middle School or Athletic Park fields (typically in the Germantown and Gaithersburg areas). We are holding off on announcing a schedule until we obtain permits, which can happen as early as March 1st.
What is the cost? The cost to attend is $20/session.
How will we register? A link to register will be included on this page once we know our schedule. We will NOT collect payment at the time of registration. In fact, we will NOT collect payment until the Friday following your child’s session(s). For example, if your child attends a session on a Wednesday, we will email you an invoice the following Friday. We understand that you may register for a session; but your child’s team may end up playing a makeup game or scheduling a practice for that day. Bottom line, you are not charged unless your child attends a session.
How many sessions can my child attend? As many as you’d like. We may offer multiple sessions each week, understanding that one day may work better for your schedule. However, if your child can attend multiple sessions during the week (and multiple sessions are offered), they are free to do so.
Will the same drills be conducted each session? Likely, but we will introduce different drills as time goes on based on things we see. BUT, we like to run the same drills as it helps with the flow of practice. The more players get used to the drills/structure of the practice, the quicker players transition between drills and less explanation is needed; which translates into a greater number of reps.
What can I do now if I am interested? Click on the button below and complete the form to show your interest in the Open Workouts. You will receive a direct email when the schedule is released.
Open Workouts is NOT A CAMP. The sessions are more comparable to a practice than a camp. For more information, please reach out to Jason Aquilante at firstname.lastname@example.org
